She lets the wind blow through her hair, shutting her eyes to the sun.



Lily feels Severus on the swing beside her, hears his feet push against the ground to match her pace. He is silent with the effort of competition, and Lily feels grateful. She swings higher and higher, swooping back and forth; she feels like a bird yet to grow its wings.



The metal creaks with consternation; the world rushes past faster, and when she reaches the top she flies, into the air.



And her eyes snap open, and there is Severus flying beside her, full of wonderment.



So Lily grabs his hand, and grabs this moment; because she knows that when they land, it’ll be gone, and they’ll be back on that world where nobody understands this, this Severus-and-Lily.

“I heard you hexed Pettigrew into a pig,” Lily says accusingly. Honestly, it seems all they do these days is fight; but that’s not her fault at all, Severus is always getting into trouble.



He shrugs. “I thought it was a badly done pig-to-human transfiguration. I was only trying to help by turning him back.”



“This isn’t a joke,” says Lily shrilly, “Why do you always do horrible stuff like that? Having magic means being responsible and not using it for bad things.”



“You don’t understand, Lily,” Severus says, looking out the window, “Power doesn’t mean anything if you don’t do anything with it.”

“Why won’t you tell me what happened?”



“…”



“You’re covered in blood! Honestly Severus, how can you call me you’re best friend when you don’t tell me anything?!”



“It’s nothing, I just –“



“Did someone do this to you? Was it that weird cult with Rosier and Wilkes — don’t think that I don’t notice, Sev, because I do, and —“



“Just drop it, okay?! It’s none of your business!”

Lily wand shoots fire and the corner of Snape’s robes, which he dodges. “I told you to stay away from me Snape!”



“No – I –,“ Snape outs between dodges, “Just hear me out, okay?”



“I’ve heard you out. I’ve heard enough.”



“No,” Snape, catching her wrist and staring into her with that oddly penetrating gaze, “I wanted to say that I love you.”



Lily stops mid-hex and stares, feeling like she should be shocked or something. She speaks before she can even think.



“You don’t understand, Severus,” Lily says softly, “Love doesn’t mean anything is you don’t do anything with it.”

She lets his fingers fun through her hair, and she shuts her eyes to his kisses.



Lily feels Severus move below her, hears his voice murmur her name into her collarbone. It’s too hot; her fingers glide slickly down the curve of his back. She feels through pulses rushing through her body, like the motion of a swing, and she goes higher, she goes higher — she feels like a bird with weights on its wings.



The bed frame creaks in consternation; the world floods away, and comes crashing back again, and she flies.



She flies.



But when her eyes flutter open, there is Severus below her, full of desperation.



So Lily holds his hand, and tries to hold that moment; but it’s already past, and they are back on that world where even she doesn’t understand this, this Severus-and-Lily.
